This Spreading Kindness website was developed to help share the curriculum that I created as part of my Girl Scout Gold Award. One of the requirements of the Gold Project is that it needs to be sustainable and can continue even after I completed the initial project.
To help meet that requirement, I have created videos of each lesson that mirror what I did in the classroom, so educators can use what I designed, in the future.
I’m Rebecca Kucera and I’m a high school senior. I completed my Girl Scout Gold Award which is the highest honor in Girl Scouts. As part of my project, I created a six-lesson curriculum based on Random Acts of Kindness that included an activity for each lesson, and I presented them to a second-grade classroom as well as over a 100 Girl Scouts.
When deciding on my project, I received inspiration from Dr. Ferial Pearson, who spoke at a Girl Scout workshop a few years prior. She was a high school teacher who had challenged her kids to implement Random Acts of Kindness in their high school. I loved the idea, especially when I heard how engaged everybody had been in the project. By focusing on Random Acts of Kindness, they made an effort to make someone else’s day a little brighter.
I am very passionate about showing kindness to everyone and having a positive outlook. I was bullied during elementary school and since I was quiet and reserved, I let other kids walk over me.
As I was developing my project, I knew I wanted to include the importance of standing up for yourself in bullying situations and also how to create a more positive and happier environment. I focused on Random Acts of Kindness and the impact that it could have towards others in these situations. I chose to work with kids between 8-10 years old, because they are eager to learn and are on-board with implementing kindness. What they learn now can dramatically affect how they treat others as they get older.
Random Acts of Kindness impacts the energy in our environments. The lessons I created illustrate how kindness leads to positive conversations, respectful actions towards others, and acceptance of your peers. It also decreases behaviors that lead to bullying and helps eliminate negative judgement.
I am excited to share these lessons with others and continue the ripple effects of Random Acts of Kindness. One simple gesture can be more meaningful than we realize.
